The Silk Museum in Soufli presents all the phases and the stages of the pre-industrial process of rearing silkworms (sericulture) and of silk processing (silk manufacturing) within the socio-economic context that made the region a major silk-producing centre in Greece (late 19th to mid-20th century).
-The First section presents the history of silk that begins from China, continues with the Greco-Roman antiquity and Byzantium, moves on to the West and proceeds up to the Ottoman period.
-The Second section is on the stages of rearing silkworms from the production of silkworm eggs until - apopnixi ("firing") of cocoons.
-The Third section refers to the processing of silk from the cleaning and sorting of cocoons to the process of weaving the famous silk from Soufli.
-The Fourth section analyzes the wider socio-economic context of silk industry development, both in Greece and in Europe (19th-20th c.) with particular emphasis on the rise and decline of the silk industry in Soufli and its contribution to the development of the city.
